Hipster Laptop

Yes, this one is to become more than just a post. I am actually trying to make this happen.
This will be updated as I progress.

Project Description

Inspired by the KindleBerry Pi (http://www.ponnuki.net/2012/09/kindleberry-pi/) and the Kindleberry Wireless (http://maxogden.com/kindleberry-wireless.html), I have decided to attempt to create one myself. To be different, I am going to use a Beagle Bone Black as the main board instead of the Raspberry Pi.

Before the KindleBerries were created, I had briefly considered the utility of a laptop with an e-paper display. At the time I was doing a large majority of my coursework on a server which only supported a text-based interface. It seemed to me that a low-spec laptop with an e-paper display and a wifi connection could have a ridiculous battery life with the added bonus of being usable even in direct sunlight. Seemed like a cool idea, but I didn't even consider the possibility of assembling one myself.

Now, Kindles are cheap, embedded computers are as well, and there is evidence that it can be done, so why not?

Research

All Kindle hacking resources lead to the MobileRead site. Their forums are invaluable, and their wiki includes a helpful guide (http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Touch_Hacking).

Hack a day has hilighted many Kindle projects (http://hackaday.com/?s=kindle). You'll see what I mean about all resources leading back to MobileRead.

Not sure why I have this... but I'm sure it is useful: https://gist.github.com/rvagg/5095506

Materials

1) Jailbreaking

I am relying heavily on the MobileRead wiki guide, which has been great. When I first looked into the Jailbreak, my Kindle's firmware (5.3.4) was too recent and I was going to have to downgrade to an older version first. But, just a few weeks later, everything has been updated and I can just install the file.

I am using the "jailbreak.modi" method, which is describe on the forum: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198446

Wow. That was really easy.
